The best laid plans...

Merry Christmas! We did get a foot of snow - more in some areas - so our dinner, tours of the Holt House, and the rest of the community activities planned for last Saturday fell by the wayside. There have been wide-spread power outages, telephone service disrupted, roads blocked by fallen trees and wires - in other words, a real mess!!

Anyone with information for the January newsletter for the society, it's time to get that together. If you haven't paid your 2010 dues, it's time for that annual chore as well. Our next meeting is Thursday, January 28th at noon - covered dish lunch before the meeting!! If schools are closed for bad weather, the meeting will be cancelled. We can hope for a nice day.

Saturday Dec 19, 2009

Saturday, Saturday...where did Thursday come from in my last post?? The dinner is Saturday...IF we don't have a foot of snow!! It sure does sound like the weather is going to be treacherous tomorrow...

The Holt House is all decorated for tours; the "fixings" for the dinner are in the refrigerator; everything is ready but the weather.... and there is a parade at 5 PM... the weather man is NOT cooperating if he doesn't want Santa to come to Glenville!!

Meetings are normally the 4th Thursday of the month at noon (covered dish lunch before the meeting). November and December meeting dates depend on the dates for Thanksgiving and Christmas!!

The Holt House, an early 20th century home, is open for special events and hosts both permanent and temporary exhibits of historical items that relate to Gilmer County and West Virginia. There is a permanent collection of military memorabilia and Veterans' information.

The historical society participates in the West Virginia State Folk Festival annually. The festival begins each year on the third Thursday in June. The 2010 festival is the 61st annual WV State Folk Festival and opens on June 17th. Be sure to visit the Holt House during the festival and take a tour guided by a costumed docent. At 7 PM on Thursday, June 17th, come to the Library Annex for an open mike ghost story session. Then take a ghost tour! On Saturday, June 19th, there will be two living history presentations in the Library Annex courtesy of the WV Division of Culture and History. 11 AM: Chief Cornstalk; 3:30 PM (after the parade): Mad Anne Bailey. Look for our riverboat float in the parade!

Glenville WV is located in Gilmer County along the Little Kanawha River. Gilmer County's only traffic light is at the corner of Rts. 33/119 and Rt. 5 on Main Street in Glenville. The WV State Folk Festival and Glenville State College are located here. The Library holds genealogical information for Gilmer County and West Virginia.
